With that being said, it’s extremely important to be efficient and reuse as many of our resources that we have. Natural resources are depleting and when we are wasteful, we are doing a lot of harm to our Mother Earth. As a native proverb states: “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

23 years old Katherine Espin from Ecuador is next in the line of favourites. Standing tall at a towering height of 172cm, Katherine is a Model and Cosmetologist by profession. “My environmental advocacy is environmental education in schools specially in elementary schools. I chose this because I believe that the best age to teach a person to have environmental conscience is at an early age because on their growing years they will learn to have respect towards the environment which will help to the future generations. I truly believe that there should exist on every academic pensum an environmental class and I will work hard on it to make it possible,” says Katherine.

Gloria Cruz Nelson as Guam for Miss Earth 2016

19 years old Gloria Cruz of Guam stands on our podium of Top 10 favourites. Promoting her country’s natural beauty, Gloria shares her environmental advocacy and says, “My environmental advocacy is the preservation of our coral reefs. Our coral reefs act as barrier for our coastlines, they protect us from wave attacks and erosion, they provide a habitat for one quarter or marine life, and are a food source for our population. Coral reefs are a vital ecosystem for marine life. Roughly 75% of the world’s reefs are being threatened from over fishing, warming waters, and pollution. In the Pacific our reefs are threatened by climate change, over-fishing, sedimentation, land based pollution, and bleaching. I chose this because Guam is surrounded by coral reefs. They are a vital sustenance for island living, they are critical for marine life survivability, and the protection of our island and it’s environment.”

Imelda Bautista Schweighart as Philippines for Miss Earth 2016

Next in the line of favourites is 21 years old Imelda Bautista Schweighart of Philippines. Her environmental advocacy aims at, “All I want is, to ban Genetically Modified Organisms and Genetically Engineered seeds in the country where I live in, Philippines. 36 countries around the world has banned this in theirs. We are an agricultural country. For somewhat reason this has been forgotten and local farmers are alarmed because of this awakening about where we are as a country. Modernity has taken us all by surprise that somehow everyone possibly is a victim because of lack of choice. Some systems in the production of Plant Food should be straightened in this country. At this point in time, this is what we should be focusing on implementing. Plant food is our life source and if we run out because of distractions, it’s gonna be scarce real food. Let’s do something together. Wherever you might be assigned to stay, we should move and do something about this.”

19 years old Russian beauty Alexandra is next in the line of favourites for Miss Earth 2016. Currently a student, Alexandra’s environmental advocacy is, “Human race is dependent on properly functioning natural processes. To save our planet and nature from global destruction and to make sure we continue to drink clean water and breathe fresh air amongst other things, focus needs to be on raising awareness of the problems we face in today's environment. By working together we can set up stricter global regulations for preserving the nature and actually encourage others to follow them. This I believe is the only way that can help us to prevent it from complete destruction and save it for our children and future generations. Top level government support and finance of private companies in the sector will make their work more efficient.”

Talking about her environmental advocacy, Manuela shares the idea of Reduce, Reuse, Respect, Recycle and Rethink. “I advocate reducing, reusing, respecting and recycling, with the dream that in the 21st century, protecting our environment will be what is trending and it will become everyday practise to educate and do our part to save the world, every little bit at a time,” says Manuela.

Alena Belova as Ukraine for Miss Earth 2016

Moving on to the next contender we have 21 years old Ukrainian beauty Alena Belova. Standing tall at an astounding height of 171cm, Alena describes herself as someone who is extremely curious and active. “There is a huge problem of plastic waste in the world. There is even such a concept of the “seventh continent” - the floating island with the size of France in the Pacific Ocean, consisting entirely of garbage. To save resources given us by the Earth is very important. But very serious problem today is the recycling of our waste. Garbage completely violates the ecological environment of our planet,” explains Alena about her environmental advovacy.
